Honduras
Our government’s recognition of the Nov. 29th fraudulent election has legitimized the illegal coup government and all of its egregious actions. Through our partners in Honduras and human rights organizations such as COFADEH (Honduran Committee of the Families of the Disappeared) we have received alarming reports of heightened repression since the Nov. 29th elections. The last few weeks have seen a resurgence of death squads throughout Honduras that have gone out in search of leaders and members of the National Resistance Front. Below you will find some of the cases of dozens of resistance members that have been murdered by these death squads with an almost blind support from our government.
Dec. 6th Death Squad style killing of five members of the resistance movement in the Villanueva neighborhood of Tegucigalpa.
Dec. 11th Decapitated body of resistance member Santos Corrales Garcia was found dumped on the road just outside of Tegucigalpa after being abducted by men wearing National Criminal Investigation Directorate uniforms and armed with machine guns. His body showed signs of torture.
Dec. 12th Human rights defender Walter Trochez, member of the LGTB community and active member of the National Resistance Front was murdered after having survived a previous assassination attempt.
Dec. 14th Death of teacher/activist Karen Hernandez Mondragon after fatal shooting.
Dec. 16th Murder of 16 year old Catherine Nicolle Rodriquez Cabrera, daughter of journalist Karol Cabrera.
Dec. 17th Abduction of two members of the Unified Peasant Movement of Aguan, MUCA in Sinaloa, Colón on Wednesday morning by four hooded men. Eleven arrest warrants have been issued for other members. 1000 peasant families occupying land in the region have been threatened with forcible removal by security forces.
The people of Honduras are in a very critical point in their struggle for democracy and social justice. The National Resistance Front points out that it is more important than ever to keep the pressure on our government to not recognize any government as a result of the illegitimate election on November 29th. The people’s demands for a constitutional assembly and the return of constitutionally elected President Zelaya are yet to be met.
We must keep the pressure on in order to guarantee that the people of Honduras are free to forge their own future in a democratic and inclusive society free of fear and repression.
CALL CONGRESS! CALL THE WHITE HOUSE! CALL THE STATE DEPARTMENT!
Urge our government to pressure the coup government to cease its human rights violations.
