Syracuse woman plans to be part of group to defy US law, aid Cubans
Syracuse, NY -- Syracuse resident and Christian Brothers Academy graduate Madelaine Greacen will travel to Cuba later this month with an ecumenical group that will defy U.S. law to deliver humanitarian aid.

"It's trying to send a message to legislators and the rest of our government that what's happening is not OK and the quality of life there is affected by the blockade," said Greacen, 28. "It's time for the evolution of this relationship to change."
She will be among members of several groups that will meet in Texas and go to Cuba with the Pastors for Peace U.S.-Cuba Friendship Caravan.
Pastors for Peace is a project of the Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization. This is the group's 20th caravan to Cuba. The group says the United States' trade embargo with Cuba, in place since 1960, hurts the people who most need help.
In 1959, Fidel Castro led a revolution that overthrew Cuba's Batista dictatorship. After that, the United States broke diplomatic ties with Cuba and instituted a trade embargo. Both policies remain in effect.
In April, President Barack Obama lifted restrictions on travel from the U.S. to Cuba for people visiting relatives there.

The U.S. Department of State describes Cuba as "a totalitarian police state which relies on repressive methods to maintain control."
"It will be interesting to see if Obama continues to make it easier for Cubans," Greacen said. "The hope is with a new administration that change will evolve."
The 1999 CBA and 2003 Villanova graduate said she has traveled in Central America and is interested in the politics there.
"I have been very aware of Cuban politics even though the Cold War was before my time," she said.
This will be her first trip to Cuba.
She spent two years teaching at a Montessori school in Chile and currently teaches at the Montessori School of Syracuse. She is also taking pre-med courses at Onondaga Community College and plans to apply to medical school in Cuba. A program in Havana offers free tuition but requires that graduates teach in underserved areas in their home country.
She also is an intern at Syracuse Community Acupuncture Clinic, where she is developing an interest in alternative medicine.
"One way I find Cuba to be absolutely fascinating is once the blockade was put in place, there were no medical supplies on the shelves and people had to think about how to do things differently," she said. "Alternative and herbal medicine just fascinates me."
The delegation -- participants are called Caravanistas -- expects to arrive in Cuba by July 23 and return to the U.S. by Aug. 4.
Greacen is eager for the trip.
"It will be interesting to see," she said. "I'm going to be taking lots of pictures."
